Antiquing: summerland

Travel is such an important and rewarding aspect of design work.  It is imperative that a designer continually seeks new and inspiring ideas, styles, cultures and experiences; they inform our work and help us grow.  And how else are we going to keep finding those special, one of a kind antiques? This past weekend I went on an antiquing trip to Summerland, CA, a village just just south of Santa Barbara.  It just happens to be one of my favorite places!  But more than just the shops and the fabulous things found within, I really love developing relationships with the proprietors.  The knowledge they share is such  an integral part of my continuing education in the field of antiques, and the stories they tell are so interesting and expiring!

But at the end of the day, regardless of the provenance, what really matters in a piece is if it speaks to me. The craftsmanship, shape,  patina, quirky details... what are they saying (and how well are they saying it)?

Here are a few of my favorite places.
