Before & After: Nautical Gut Job

Remember the kitchen gut job I posted about a while back?

Well, here it is in all its re-vamped glory!  Isn’t she a beaut?

Here’s how we went from cramped to spacious.  First, we opened up the walls to create an open floor plan.  Then we used a white, airy palate to make the space feel large.  Custom cabinetry made use of every inch.

To add a little visual intrigue to all the wide-open whiteness, we added beams and tongue and groove woodwork to the ceiling. Painting the beams a deep navy added an element of surprise.  I always like to add a little punch somewhere, and I’m thrilled that my clients took the chance and followed my vision.

The contrast between the white and navy also highlights the backsplash.  We used white subway tile, and highlighted it with ¼” black grout.  The groute reads like a graphic pattern!

That covers the base palate, contrasting tone and patterns that break up the space visually.  But we can’t forget about the room’s jewelry!

Since my clients love to sail, I sourced antique nautical lighting and brass hardware typically found on boats.  We wanted to keep the nautical elements referential, without getting into theme territory.
